Fast Food in our Cafeteria DUE Wed. 2-27-08
Some students compare the choice of food in our cafeteria to that of public schools. Some public schools allow students to go off campus for lunch, to go to fast food restaurants (McDonald's, Burger King, etc.) during lunch time. There are several questions to think about and answer: Do you think that SSSD students should be allowed to go off campus during lunch? Do you think our cafeteria should serve fast food from McDonald's or Burger King? Think about the consequences to health when you eat a diet heavy in fats and calories (heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc.). What habits can this lead to when teen get older?

Pepsi Superbowl Commercial DUE Mon., Feb. 11, 2008
Pepsi created a commercial for the Superbowl (Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008). This commercial, called, "Bob's House", was based on an old joke known by deaf people. Watch the commercial at: http://au.youtube.com:80/watch?v=ffrq6cUoE5A . What is your opinion of the commercial? Did you like it? Were you happy that deaf culture has gotten exposure on t.v.? Also, discuss this - the Alexander Graham Bell Association (supports oralism), sent a letter of complaint to Pepsi, saying that the commercial gives the false assumption that all deaf people use ASL. What is your opinion of this? Give your opinion of other's comments, too.

Internet privacy DUE Mon., Jan 21, 2008
Many students, whether hearing or deaf, have their own webpages on community websites like MySpace.com or Facebook.com. If the webpages are not "blocked", then anyone who logs online can have access to the webpage and see what the students have posted, like pictures, information about her/himself, comments, etc.
If a teacher, administrator, or any other person from a school saw these webpages, reported them at school, and the student was disciplined at school, what is your opinion of this? Do you feel that any information a student posts online at home and not at school is the right of the student? Do you feel the school should alert the parents of the student? Think about and discuss the right to privacy as well as the dangers of exposing too much information about oneself online.

Global warming and the presidential candidates - due Jan. 11, 2008
Global warming is a serious issue that people are debating. The presidential candidates are using the global warming issue in their campaigns. Some of them support becoming involved in international environmental agreements (such as the Kyoto Protocol). The Kyoto Protocol has 175 countries involved. The protocol was written to establish limits on greenhouse emissions all over the world, thus reducing global warming. The United States has not accepted this.
This question has three parts, answer each one in your blog response. What do you think we should do as a country to reduce global warming? How can we reduce greenhouse emissions? Check the website, www.2008electionprocon.org, to see what your favorite candidate says about this and tell us if you agree with her/him or not.
